What is SATS? (State Akin to Sleep)

Direct Definition

SATS (State Akin to Sleep) is a state of profound physical relaxation and drowsiness—such as the hypnagogic window right before falling asleep—in which your physical senses quiet down while your conscious attention remains clear enough to direct an imaginal scene.

“Sleep is the door through which the conscious mind enters the subconscious.”

How Neville Goddard Defined SATS

In his 1948 lecture series Five Lessons (Lesson 1), Neville Goddard described the state as follows:

“It is a state in which you are conscious and quite able to move or open your eyes, but have no desire to do so. In that state, you easily assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.”
— Neville Goddard, Five Lessons (1948, Lesson 1: "Consciousness Is The Only Reality")

During ordinary daytime hours, external sensory stimuli and analytical doubts often intrude. In SATS, physical sensory inputs subside. In Neville's metaphysical teaching, this relaxed condition allows the practitioner to impress the subconscious mind with the subjective feeling of having already attained the desire.

The 5 Steps of SATS Practice

Step 1

Relax the Physical Body

Lie comfortably in bed or recline in an armchair. Release tension from your jaw, neck, shoulders, and chest until your limbs feel warm and heavy.

Step 2

Select a Short Scene Implying Completion (~3 to 7 Seconds)

Construct a brief, simple action that would naturally occur after the realization of your desire. Keeping the scene approximately 3 to 7 seconds long is a practical suggestion that helps keep focus sharp:

  • Hearing a close friend say: “Congratulations, I’m so happy for you.”
  • Feeling a solid key turning inside the lock of your new home.
  • Feeling the texture of a wedding ring while holding hands.
Step 3

Loop the Scene from First Person

Look through your own eyes. Feel the physical texture and hear the voices. When the 5-second scene finishes, reset back to the starting frame and loop it gently without rush.

Step 4

Rest into Naturalness & Relief

As the scene repeats, the feeling transitions from attempting to visualize into a quiet sense of relief, gratitude, and naturalness. It stops feeling like a distant wish and feels like an accepted reality.

Step 5

Fall Asleep in the Assumption

Drift off to sleep while resting in this satisfied internal state: “It is done.” Neville taught that falling asleep in the consciousness of the fulfilled wish carries the assumption into the subconscious during sleep.

Guidance for Common SATS Challenges

✦ What If My Mental Images Are Weak or Blurry?

You do not need high-definition visual imagery for SATS. Neville repeatedly emphasized touch and sound over picture-perfect sight. Focus on the physical texture of an object in your hand, or simply loop a single spoken sentence while resting in the feeling of relief.

✦ What If I Fall Asleep Too Quickly?

If fatigue knocks you out before you establish your scene, adjust your posture: sit upright in a comfortable armchair or prop pillows behind your back in bed. Alternatively, start your session 15 minutes before your usual bedtime.

✦ Wandering Into Runaway Daydreams

If your scene drifts into an elaborate sequence of events, bring attention back to the single 5-second anchor action. Replay only that focal moment.

✦ Third-Person Movie Screen Perspective

If you find yourself watching yourself from afar, place yourself inside your body: look out through your own eyes and look down at your own hands.
